Bipolar Disorder: Working with the Highs and Lows (1 Day)

Course Overview



This one day course introduces delegates to the topic of bipolar disorder. The course will assist delegates in understanding what this term describes, the different types of bipolar and the characteristic 'signs and symptoms' of this potentially severe mental health problem. The course will review the NICE recommended treatment pathways, including an overview of medications prescribed for bipolar, highlighting both intended and unintended (side) effects and psychological therapies for the disorder. Delegates will go on to explore how we might be of help to someone experiencing the highs and lows of bipolar psychological approaches, including day to day emotional and practical support, crisis responses and how to support someone in making use of self-management tools.

This course aims to provide delegates with the skills to:
  • Define bipolar and describe the different types and treatment pathways
  • Recognise signs of mania, hypomania and depression
  • Identify medications commonly used for managing bipolar
  • Describe recovery-oriented support options
  • Refer to the range of self-management options

    • Psychosis, mania, hypomania and depression
    • Risk Assessment
    • Medication for bipolar: intended and unintended side-effects
    • Recovery and support: self-management tools and person-centred approaches

    Target Audience

    This course is relevant to anybody in the health and social care sector who works with people who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The course is suitable for both frontline staff and managers.

    There are no pre-training requirements for this course.

    The delegates will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
