Managing Sickness and Absence

Course Overview


The training has been designed to support existing organisational policy and procedure connected to managing sickness and absence and to help delegates reflect upon what is working well, what challenges this aspect of managing staff, and what they could do to improve their practice further. It is a highly practical day with opportunities to discuss, practice and learn tools, skills and techniques within a safe, supportive and enjoyable environment.

  • What is Absence: statistics, costs, Health and Work (reference: Health and Safety Executive), healthy work environment and well-being
  • What is Stress: causes, impact on individuals and organisation
  • The role of the Management Plan
  • Management Style and Organisational Culture
  • Sickness Absence: short term and long term absence, unauthorised absence, documenting, liaising with the medical profession and HR
  • Return to Work Interview: approach, preparation, conducting, recording and communicating, practicing
  • Disability and Absence: avoiding discrimination, seeking external advice, documentation

Methods of Delivery


The course uses an interactive learning approach that ensures participants are kept fully involved throughout, with their background, experience and knowledge being central to the day. The trainer will guide and support the group through their learning experience, utilising a range of learning methods including pairs exercises, tutor input, plenary discussion, group work, role play and case studies.

Course Content

  • Understand how to create an environment which is 'healthy'
  • Understand how the management style impacts upon the health of the team
  • Be able to define stress, its causes both inside and outside of work, know when to sign post to other services
  • Describe the responsibilities of each party and how to put in place a management plan to assist someone experiencing stress that impacts on work
  • Recognise the difference between short term, long term and unauthorised absence and understand their responsibilities in each instance (with reference to organisational policy)
  • Describe the role of the Return to Work interview and be able to conduct an effective interview
  • Understand what is meant by a disability and with reference to legislation be able to describe the responsibilities of an organisation to consider reasonable adjustments
  • Understand the importance of clear and comprehensive recording and the need to communicate with senior managers/HR and external professionals e.g.

Target Audience

Supervisors and managers who have first line responsibility for managing these issues.

The delegates will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
