Depression & Bipolar Disorder Awareness

Course Overview

This course examines the medical and psycho-social models of mental health and ill health, and thus places depression and bipolar disorder in their broader contexts. Different types of depression are looked at, as well as the different degrees that they can manifest themselves (mild, moderate and severe). The causes and the signs and symptoms of both clinical depression and bipolar disorder are focused on, as are the treatments, support and self-help appropriate for both conditions. This will include time spent on WRAPs and crisis plans. Throughout the course the medical perspective is balanced with the lived reality of people who have these conditions. The day finishes with the recovery model and the ways in which it can help both people who suffer from depression and bipolar disorder as well as those who are supporting them.
