Course Overview


This one-day course aims to give participants an increased understanding of advocacy and an awareness and ability to carry out the parts of a job role that involve elements of advocacy.

The course has been designed to look at different forms of advocacy (e.g. self advocacy; citizen advocacy; working with an advocacy partner; collective advocacy; instructed and uninstructed advocacy; the role of the independent mental capacity advocate) and how these may be used to enable people with learning disabilities to have more control over their lives.

  • The Social model of disability
  • Issues and dilemmas

Methods of Delivery


The course is largely based around the roles and experiences of the delegates with trainer facilitation throughout. Trainer presentation and course notes provide the framework for the learning.

Course Content

  • To understand advocacy and identify its styles
  • To demonstrate related skills which can be applied with customers
  • To understand the underlying principles of advocacy for people with disabilities
  • To consider the challenges inherent in advocacy work and identify strategies for their management

Target Audience

Anyone working in social care with customers living with learning disabilities who wish to understand more about advocacy and how to support the provision of advocacy in their work role.

The course is largely based around the roles and experiences of the delegates with trainer facilitation throughout. Trainer presentation and course notes provide the framework for the learning.

Certification

Upon completion of the course, the delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.
