Course Overview


Central Training's Challenging Behaviour Refresher course offers the opportunity to refresh the knowledge and skills gained from the Managing and Responding to Challenging Behaviour full day course. The course will cover the key elements of the 1 day course - using proactive approaches, the functions of challenging behaviours, potential triggers and assessing/managing risk. Learners will also refresh their knowledge of assertive negotiation and calming techniques and reflect on their own support needs should an incident of challenging behaviour occur. There will be opportunities to reflect on their practice in light of previous learning and to consider if there are any further areas for development.

Learning Outcomes


This course is designed to enable delegates to:
  • Adopt a positive and proactive approach to responding to aggression
  • Identify the contributing factors of aggression
  • Utilise teamwork, limit setting, and boundaries to avoid/contain incidents
  • Practise a range of calming, problem-solving, and de-escalation techniques
  • Understand the support needs of staff and clients involved in challenging incidents
  • Perform risk assessment, ongoing evaluation, reporting and recording

    The course uses a range of training methods to provide variety and engagement including: trainer presentation, PowerPoint presentations, flipchart work, group work and discussion, case studies and practical exercises.

    • Defining challenging behaviour, violence and aggression
    • Understanding why behaviours may happen - functions and triggers
    • The 5 stages of behaviour and how to respond
    • Using assertiveness and negotiation to resolve disquiet
    • Aftercare: responding to the support needs of everyone, including staff
    • Reflecting on practice and identifying areas for further development

    Target Audience

    Organisations and individuals within the regulated and professional sectors of health, housing and social care who come into contact with people who use challenging behaviour to express themselves.

    Training Considerations

    Delegates must have attended the 1 day course within the last 3 years

    Certification

    Upon completion of the course, the delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.
