Course Overview



The course focuses on facilitating a better understanding of the difficulties experienced by people who have dementia and helping learners develop appropriate skills - including verbal and non-verbal communication. The learners are also exposed to a range of methods of promoting and continuously maintaining quality of life for people who have dementia, within the person-centred care and support framework.

The course is also designed to make reference to appropriate learning and development tools specific to the individual roles and responsibilities of the learners.

Learning Outcomes


This course aims to equip candidates with the skills to
  • Define, identify, assess, and diagnose dementia, including an understanding of its co-occurrence with other age-related illnesses
  • Confidently risk-assess people who have dementia in order to promote independence
  • Consider treatment and support approaches
  • Understand the role of communication and adaptive communication styles
  • Recognise how relationships affect the care of people who have dementia

Methods of Delivery


This course is delivered using trainer presentation, worksheet exercises, group-work, DVD, and handouts. Delegates are highly encouraged to contribute throughout the training.
