Suicidal Distress: Support Strategies & Risk Assessment (Half Day) Course Overview Suicidal distress is a complex phenomenon that exists along a continuum ranging from feelings and thoughts of death, through to active planning and suicidal acts that can end life. This practical half-day course for support staff will highlight the common risk factors and warning signs to look out for and explore best practice in assessing and managing risk. Delegates will have an opportunity to address common concerns surrounding talking about suicide and learn about useful questions to ask someone at suicidal risk. The course will also consider the wider support needs of those who may be affected by suicidal behaviour including friends, family and staff. Learning Outcomes This course aims to equip delegates with the skills to Define suicidal distress and suicidal behaviour Identify common risk factors and warning signs of suicidality Describe the basic elements of a suicide risk assessment Consider options for managing risk at different levels Recognise the possible support needs of those affected by suicide Methods of Delivery The trainer will use a variety of learning methods to both inform and engage delegates in a relaxed and interactive atmosphere, including PowerPoint presentation, flipchart work, group discussions and small group work. Training Considerations Delegates should consider their personal experiences around the issues of suicide. Certification The delegates will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.
